Chapter Twelve
âShall we go to dinner?â Daniel asked, helping me out of his plush car.
âYes, I suppose,â I said, looking down at my outfit.
âYou look great.â His eyes traced me.
I tried to curb the stupid smile that spread over my face. It felt good to be appreciated. My father had appraised my little black dress that flowed from the waist. Antony had scowled, insisting that he accompany us, just in case. Luckily, Father had refused. At least he trusted me enough to make my own choices.
âThank you,â I replied, admiring his grey suit as he held open the door of the restaurant.
A friendly waitress showed us to the table, welcoming us with a drink. Daniel, the perfect gentleman, helped me into my seat.
Automatically searching the room, I relaxed my tense shoulders when I noted only two other couples eating nearby. Phew, no warlocks as far as I could see.
âI have magical powers.â
My gaze snapped to Daniel, who winked as he twirled a fork between his fingers, making it dance. Blimey, I had almost bolted for the door. My heart skipped several beats as I slowed my breath. There was no need to panic, I wasnât sitting next to a warlock.
Laughing nervously, I glanced over my shoulder when the door to the restaurant opened. My teeth gritted when Lee walked in with Verity. They didnât even look in our direction as they were guided to a table in the corner. What did they think they were doing?
Lee, with his bright blonde spiked hair, tattoos and ridiculously huge frame, wasnât exactly inconspicuous. Verity was petite, her pixie cut making her look like a fairy.
âAre you alright?â Daniel asked.
Turning back to face him, I smiled. It wasnât easy to concentrate on him when Lee was singing his request for a menu. âYes, Iâm fine, thank you. So, what do you do for fun?â
âI know it might sound a little boring,â he said, leaning his elbows on the table. ââ¦but I like to read historical novels and go bike riding. Thatâs not too cliché, is it?â
Raising my eyebrows with a little smile, I shook my head. âNot at all. I prefer the calmer lifestyle, I must admit.â
âExcept when you go to clubs?â Daniel waved the waitress over and we ordered.
âI rarely go out,â I said when she had gone.
My skin heated as Leeâs voice grew a little louder. What was he playing at? Father had allowed me freedom to go on a date without a chaperone. That did not mean Lee and Verity had to babysit me.
Daniel chattered on about his likes and dislikes. He watched me, his gaze delving into mine as I half-listened. He was attentive, I had to give him that. However, I was too focused on my siblings to give him the attention he deserved.
Our meal was eaten with him doing the talking. As soon as my knife and fork were down, my phone vibrated in my bag. He excused himself to go to the toilet.
âOh good,â Lee said, making me jump as I checked my phone.
